Hartington, which nestles in the upper Dove Valley, is renowned for its famous Stilton Cheese which can be bought along with many different varieties of Cheese from the local Cheese Shop in the village.
The Charles Cotton Hotel in the village is named after the famous fishing squire, Charles Cotton, who was a great friend of Izaak Walton, the most famous of fly fishers. In the nearby Beresford Dale is the "Fishing House" which was built by Charles Cotton to commemorate their friendship.
The village has a public house, The Devonshire Arms, which provides bar meals and the Charles Cotton Hotel also has a public bar providing meals. There are two local provision shops, a Post Office, a Garage, 3 Gift Shops, a Craft Pottery Unit and 2 Tea Rooms. Frequent Craft Fairs are held in the Village Hall on Sundays during the year.
The 12th Century Church of St. Giles provides a peaceful background to the village and the pretty village pond complete with the white ducks provides a pleasant area to sit and relax. There are numerous walks in the area many of which can be started from the village itself. One beautiful walk takes you from the village following the River Dove through Beresford Dale, Biggin Dale, Mill Dale right down to Dove Dale at Thorpe.
Two cycle trails are situated within 2 miles of the village. The trails are on what used to be old railway lines and provide easy and pleasant cycle rides with beautiful views of the surrounding countryside. One being on the old Manifold Valley Railway line travelling from Hulme End to Waterhouses and passing Thors Cave en route. The second being the old High Peak Railway from Buxton to Ashbourne, which you can join at either Hartington Station or Parsley hay Station. This now forms the Tissington Trail.
